Do I Need an Apostille for a UK Marriage Certificate?
You may need an apostille if an overseas authority has asked for your UK marriage certificate to be legalised, authenticated or apostilled.
This is common when proving a marriage for a spouse or family visa, residency, citizenship, a name change, marriage registration, divorce proceedings, inheritance or another official process abroad.
The apostille confirms the origin of the certificate by authenticating the relevant UK signature, stamp or seal. It does not verify every detail recorded about the marriage or guarantee acceptance by the receiving authority.

How to Get an Apostille for Your UK Marriage Certificate
Step 1: Start Your Order Online
Use the Ace Apostille online order page and select Marriage Certificate as the document type.
Step 2: Tell Us the Destination Country
Enter the country where the certificate will be used. This helps identify whether translation or further consular legalisation may be required.
Step 3: Send Your Official Paper Certificate
Send the official registry-issued certificate to Ace Apostille by post or courier, or bring it to one of the available offices using the instructions supplied with your order.
Step 4: We Check Your Certificate
Ace Apostille checks that the certificate appears suitable for direct paper apostille and identifies issues that could delay submission.
Step 5: We Submit It for UK Apostille Legalisation
The certificate is submitted through the FCDO Legalisation Office process. The paper apostille is attached to the physical marriage certificate.
Step 6: We Return the Completed Document
Once completed, the apostilled certificate is returned using your selected delivery option. Ace Apostille also provides a scanned PDF copy by email.

Does a Marriage Certificate Need Solicitor Certification Before Apostille?
Usually, no. An official paper UK marriage certificate can go directly to paper apostille because it was issued by a official public registry.
Adding solicitor certification unnecessarily may change which signature the apostille authenticates. This may be unsuitable if the overseas authority specifically wants the official registrar-issued certificate Apostilled.
If you only have a photocopy, know that the official document is protected by Crown Copyright and a photocopy is not suitable for Apostille. Ordering an official replacement certificate from the GRO is usually the clearer route.
Can I Get an e-Apostille for a UK Marriage Certificate?
No. Current UK Government guidance states that marriage certificates are not eligible for an e-Apostille.
The appropriate route is a paper-based apostille attached to the physical certificate. This is why Ace Apostille needs the official paper marriage certificate rather than an emailed scan.
What If the Destination Is Outside the Hague Apostille Convention?
An apostille may be only the first step if the destination country does not apply the Hague Apostille Convention to UK documents.
Further embassy, consular or local legalisation may be required after the FCDO apostille. Check the current country status and instructions from the organisation receiving your certificate before ordering additional services.
Ace Apostille can review the destination details and explain the available service route, but the receiving authority makes the final acceptance decision.

UK Marriage Certificate Apostille FAQs
Do I need an apostille for my UK marriage certificate?
You need one if the overseas organisation receiving your certificate has asked for it to be apostilled, legalised or authenticated. Check its instructions before ordering because requirements vary by country and purpose.
Can a UK marriage certificate be apostilled?
Yes. An official paper marriage certificate issued by a recognised UK public registry can usually receive a paper apostille from the FCDO Legalisation Office.
If the marriage certificate was signed by a Minister of Religion, the minister must have their signature registered in the FCDO database.
What certificate format should I send?
Send the official paper certificate issued by the registry authority. An official replacement or certified copy from that authority is suitable, but a scan, screenshot or plain photocopy is not suitable for direct apostille.
Can I apostille a photocopy of my marriage certificate?
A plain photocopy cannot be apostilled directly as the official marriage certificate. A solicitor-certified photocopy may follow a separate route, but the receiving authority may reject it if it requires the official registry-issued certificate.
Does my certificate need solicitor or notary certification?
Usually, no. An official UK marriage certificate can normally be submitted directly for paper apostille without additional solicitor or notary certification.
Can I get an e-Apostille for my marriage certificate?
No. UK marriage certificates are currently excluded from the e-Apostille service and require a paper apostille.
Can an old or laminated marriage certificate be apostilled?
An older certificate may be apostilled if it is complete, readable and verifiable, but a laminated or damaged certificate should be reviewed first. The FCDO may require additional signature checks, and an official replacement may be safer.
Where can I order a replacement UK marriage certificate?
For an England or Wales marriage, order from the GRO or the local register office where it was registered. Scottish certificates are available through National Records of Scotland, and Northern Irish certificates through GRONI.
Can the UK apostille a marriage certificate issued abroad?
No. A certificate issued outside the UK must normally be legalised in the country that issued it. The UK Legalisation Office legalises eligible UK documents.
Does an apostilled marriage certificate need translating?
It may do. Ask the receiving authority which language and translation format it accepts, and whether translation should take place before or after the apostille.
